Oregano oil
(Redirected from Oregano)
Oregano oil is one of the three components of Phase 1 of the NAC Protocol.
The 2.02 protocol states:
Origanum Vulgare (Oregano) contains two active compounds in abundance, Carvacrol and Thymol.
Carvacrol
Thymol
Other varieties of oregano
Occasionally an oregano oil capsule will list Origanum minutiflorum rather than Origanum Vulgare. One such brand is Carlyle, which is often recommended as a starting OO capsule. Further research is needed to understand whether there is any considerable difference between the two species.
Criticisms
Gut microbiome concerns
There is a general concern that oregano oil may destroy a gut microbiome if the oregano oil destroys all bacteria.
On /r/cosmicdeathfungus, Space Cowboy shared several studies that say otherwise[1]:
- Polyphenols from selected dietary spices and medicinal herbs differentially affect common food-borne pathogenic bacteria and lactic acid bacteria[2]
- Effect of dietary oregano (Origanum vulgare L.) essential oil on growth performance, cecal microflora and serum antioxidant activity of broiler chickens[3]
- The In Vitro and In Vivo Effect of Carvacrol in Preventing Campylobacter Infection, Colonization and in Improving Productivity of Chicken Broilers[4]
- A carvacrol–thymol blend decreased intestinal oxidative stress and influenced selected microbes without changing the messenger RNA levels of tight junction proteins in jejunal mucosa of weaning piglets[5]
- Effects of oregano (Origanum vulgare L.) and rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) aqueous extracts on broiler performance, immune function and intestinal microbial population[6]
- COMPOSITION AND BACTERICIDAL ACTIVITY AGAINST BENEFICIAL AND PATHOGENIC BACTERIA OF OREGANO ESSENTIAL OILS [7]
